The Vehicle Routing Problem

The Order Changes Everything

Having one truck and several delivery locations does not determine the order in which those locations should be visited. That order can make a large difference even when the vehicle, parcels, roads, and customers are exactly the same.

Goods in the truck are first matched to their destinations. A feasible but unplanned tour then visits every stop and returns to the hub. A second tour changes only the stop sequence and completes the same deliveries over a shorter distance. The contrast introduces the vehicle routing problem in its simplest form: organizing a set of required visits into an efficient journey. This matters for fuel use, driver hours, fleet capacity, and delivery cost. Larger real-world versions add multiple trucks, time windows, capacities, and uncertain travel times, but the basic insight remains visible here: planning the route can save resources without changing the service being provided.
