How a Supply Chain Works

FIELD GUIDE

Signals Up, Goods Down

A finished delivery is the last step of a much longer process. Customer orders must be communicated to sellers, manufacturers, and suppliers; materials and finished goods then travel in the opposite direction. Understanding those two directions is essential before studying delays or failures in a supply chain.

Organizations along the chain and customers across the city appear before anything moves. Orders then travel upstream as each tier requests what it needs from the next. The final act reverses attention to the physical movement of parts and products downstream until customer demand is met. This separation clarifies why an order can be placed long before its corresponding product arrives, and why a disturbance at one tier affects several others later. The film is a map of the basic mechanism: supply chains coordinate information, production, inventory, and transport across different locations and different times.
