Closing the Last Long Walk

A trunk bus line can move people efficiently along a corridor, yet passengers living far from its stops may face a long walk at both ends of the trip. That access burden can make an otherwise fast line unattractive.

The opening act follows passengers from doors across a wide service area to the main bus and records their average journey time. The alternative assigns two small feeder vehicles near each station. They collect passengers from surrounding locations, connect them to the trunk stop, and provide a shorter last-mile trip after alighting. The closing screen compares complete passenger travel times, including the trade between reduced walking and any added feeder waiting or riding. The video illustrates why trunk-line speed is only one component of transit quality. A network can become more useful by improving access to the fast service, provided feeder routes and schedules do not add more time than they save.
