VISUAL ESSAY / INTERSECTIONS

Knotted Intersection

FIELD GUIDE

Untying the Crossing Knot

The center of a conventional intersection forces many turning paths to compete for the same space. A knotted intersection rearranges those paths and schedules passage through several smaller conflict areas, allowing movements to weave through a compact geometry in a controlled rhythm.

This video follows straight, left-turn, and right-turn streams from all four approaches. Magnified views visit successive conflict regions so the timing and path geometry can be examined locally, while the full view shows how those regions fit together. The smaller central turn radius keeps the designed junction compact. The central idea is not that turning conflicts disappear; they are relocated and organized so vehicles reach each conflict point at compatible times. Connected and automated vehicles make that precise timing conceivable. The demonstration is an explanatory rendering of the paper's design logic, rather than a claim that the layout can be transferred unchanged to any existing intersection.
